Initial notes on short films
a)A 10 word description of the story/events
b)The genre
c)One WWW and EBI
Meshes of the afternoon
A) A woman returns home and kills herself
B) Mystery? - Experimental / silent
C) A surreal depiction of something with very abstract camera work and is riddled with symbolism
- Hard to critique something so abstract with many possible interpretations and meanings but the short film is undeniably confusing, intentionally or not, as it switches from POVS to more objective camera work in a confusing way which could be said to further distort reality - perhaps her journey into insanity?
La Jetée
A) A man is sent to the past and future chooses past
B) Experimental
C) An interesting insight into our obsession with the past and how it can be the literal death of us (similar to Great Gatsby) Good use of powerful images which are made more powerful by the choice of using single frames for longer duration/ still photos
Exposition could be said to be overused but was essential to the short film that functioned like a short novel with pictures
Both are post WW2 short films but La Jetée seems far move driven by post war themes, with a post war or apocalyptic event (nuclear i think) setting. The scientists controlling the experiment whisper in German and subject the French prisoners to these cruel experiments with little regard for them
